Y’all… my heart is heavy this week. And I know I ain’t the only one feeling it.
When I tell you the news of Big Freedia’s loss had me clutching my pearls and saying a prayer from my heart—I mean it. The Queen of Bounce herself is grieving something fierce, and it ain’t just a headline. It’s a heartbreak.
Devon Hurst, her longtime partner of 20 years, passed away at just 38 years old. That ain’t no ordinary loss, sugar—that’s losing the one you thought you’d be old and gray with. That’s losing part of your rhythm. Your anchor. Your soft place to land.
Big Freedia may be all shake and bounce on stage, but offstage? She’s human like the rest of us. And when you’ve been riding with somebody that long, you don’t just lose a partner—you lose a history, a rhythm, and a soul connection.
Now y’all know I had to go light my stage, sit down with my cards, and ask My Divine Angels the question that’s been on everybody’s mind:
What’s next for Big Freedia after losing Devon?
The cards flew out like a strong wind through the French Quarter. And baby… they told a story.
-
Six of Wands (Reversed)
-
Ace of Wands (Reversed)
-
Ace of Cups
Let’s break it down together, heart to heart, like we’re sittin’ at brunch on a Sunday with mimosas and mascara-streaked tears.
The Pain Behind the Spotlight: Six of Wands (Reversed)
Now the Six of Wands upright is all about victory, public praise, that feeling of walking in your purpose and knowing you’re being celebrated. But when it’s reversed, honey, it’s another story.
This card tells me that Freedia is struggling under the weight of being "the strong one" in front of the cameras. She’s a performer, a pioneer, a symbol of joy and resilience for the LGBTQ+ community. But behind closed doors?
She’s not feeling victorious right now. She’s feeling lost. Overwhelmed. The grief is dimming her light, at least for now.
Spirit showed me a spotlight she no longer wants to stand in. Not because she doesn’t love her fans, but because her soul is in mourning, and clapping hands can’t fix that.
Sometimes when you’ve built your whole life on being a beacon of joy, you forget you’re allowed to crumble too. And baby, Freedia is crumbling—and it’s okay.
Burnt Out and Broken: Ace of Wands (Reversed)
Now when the Ace of Wands comes in reversed, we’re looking at a serious loss of passion, motivation, and creative spark.
This card screamed one word to me: Exhausted.
Freedia has been carrying so many hats—artist, activist, entrepreneur, culture-shifter—and with Devon gone, the flame that fueled so much of her fire has dimmed. She ain’t feeling inspired right now. She’s questioning everything.
This card says she might pull back creatively—maybe even cancel some appearances or quietly delay new projects. She needs space. And Spirit says that space is sacred.
The Ace reversed doesn’t mean her fire is out for good—it means she needs time to rekindle it in a new way. Her path is shifting. And that takes rest, not rush.
The Heart Reopens: Ace of Cups
Now here’s where Spirit gave me chills—the Ace of Cups came through like a gentle breeze after a thunderstorm.
This card is pure, deep emotional healing. A new start for the heart. And not necessarily in romance—but in self-love, spiritual connection, and opening to a new purpose.
Despite the heaviness she’s carrying, Freedia’s spirit is not broken. Spirit says she’s going to grieve openly, and through that process, she’s going to unlock deeper emotional wisdom than she’s ever known.
I saw her creating something powerful out of this loss—maybe a project, maybe a foundation in Devon’s honor, or maybe just speaking her truth in a way that touches people who’ve never felt seen.
The Ace of Cups tells me: love will flow again. Not just to her, but through her. It’s just beginning to bubble beneath the surface.
The Spiritual Pause: The Hanged One
Whew. When I saw The Hanged One, I had to put my hand over my heart.
This card right here? It’s not about movement. It’s about surrender. Letting go. Hanging in the discomfort and trusting that a higher perspective is coming—even when everything hurts.
Spirit showed me that Big Freedia is entering a deep spiritual transformation. She’s gonna spend the rest of this year in a sort of cocoon—reevaluating her beliefs, her direction, and her place in this world without Devon by her side.
But here’s the beautiful part: this ain’t a breakdown. It’s a breakthrough.
The Hanged One teaches us that when we stop trying to “fix” grief, and instead sit with it, we rise with new wisdom. And Big Freedia? She’s gonna come out of this season more spiritually aligned, emotionally raw, and creatively renewed than we’ve ever seen.
She just needs time. And we, as her fans and sisters in spirit, need to give her that space.
Devon’s Energy in the Cards
Spirit nudged me to say this loud and clear:
Devon’s soul is with her.
Even though his physical body has transitioned, his energy is still guiding her—through signs, songs, dreams, and little moments of synchronicity. I saw a vision of Freedia walking alone and a feather drifting down at her feet. That’s Devon. Reminding her she’s not alone.
And baby, Spirit says this love they shared? It ain’t over. It’s just changed form.
Ladies, if you’ve ever lost somebody who knew your soul—not just your story, but your soul—you know this kind of pain don’t go away quick. And for Big Freedia, this loss has cracked her wide open.
But from those cracks? The light’s gonna come in.
So what’s next for Big Freedia?
-
A sacred pause
-
A retreat from noise
-
A heart-opening transformation
-
And in time, a rebirth of purpose
She won’t bounce right back, and she shouldn’t have to. But when she returns to that stage, when she releases her next word, beat, or breath—we’ll feel Devon’s love right there in the rhythm.
Until then, we hold space. We send prayers. And we honor the Queen of Bounce as she becomes the Queen of Healing, too.
With love and light,
Shannel 💖
